Enrico Camanni recounts the short and dazzling existential parabola of a contemporary mountaineering legend, Californian Gary Hemming. Bear Tosco confronts a mountain of magnetic appeal, Nanga Parbat, which has fueled the obsession of generations of "conquerors of the useless." These are narratives that cross the boundaries of biographies and reconstructions of memorable feats to investigate the consciences of men and women who dreamed of the impossible and made it real even at the cost of losing themselves.
Enrico Camanni is a writer, journalist and above all a mountaineer and a great connoisseur of the Alps. He was editor-in-chief of the "Rivista della Montagna," founded the monthly "Alp," and has been working with the daily "La Stampa" and other newspapers since 1999. If I Should Not Return. Obsession and the Naked Mountain (66thand2nd, 2023) has been hailed by critics as a perfect fictional essay that traces the relationship between great mountaineers-from Albert Mummery to Élisabeth Revol, Simone Moro to Daniele Nardi, Reinhold Messner to Nives Meroi-and a mountain, Nanga Parbat, also known by the appellation of Man-Eater.
